It’s been decades that stakeholders in Pakistan are talking about illiteracy and shows their worries but do nothing, and the result is that, that according to UNO report, unfortunately, Pakistan’s under the head of Educational Empowerment literacy rate in Pakistan’s standing is 160th among all countries of the World or in other words 55% that includes those who can only write their name and sign.
The Why of Why
Due to too much poverty, i.e., more than 70% population is living below poverty line, means they have no cloth, shelter and food, on average family comprise of seven members among which three pupils are either older or infants, means not labor. This too much dependency enforces parents to send their children to do labor job instead of schooling.
This impact on overall socio-economic condition of a country in several ways.
It directly effect on child’s psychology, health and behavior in society.
No doubt, in short run, you get cheap labor, and hence, products are being produced in cheap and economic price but in long run when there is only growth but not development, these results in increasing economic indicators with decreasing rate and ultimately decreasing with decreasing rate. And when situation is such that government role is almost zero for this sector as they are spending hardly 3% of development budget in education sector.
Besides the above mentioned facts, in country where in urban areas, ratio of teachers to student is 40:1, then what to talk about rural areas where cows and donkeys are found in schools. Or where teachers are teaching, shelters are not available.
Teachers are not competent both in rural and urban areas. Furthermore, the cultural factor for not sending girls, especially to school for their superstitious believes and norms. However, our more than 60% of population comprise of females.
The cultural obstacle of not sending girls in schools.
These and many other factors are moving our economic condition in depriving position due to major factor of illiteracy. And many of us have to realize this and stand for the reason.
