Pakistan is one of the several countries in the world with a growing illiteracy rate. In a land where 60 percent of youth are uneducated and only 1 in 3 women can read and write, the Taaluq foundation has been working hard to change this trend. Taaluq foundation has executed an innovative solution to promoting girls in Pakistan’s rural and isolated areas such as Kashmir -Taaluq home academies – whereby girls who usually face various barriers to getting an education are converting teachers and role models in the town. Taaluq foundation has found that the most efficient and sustainable long-term solution for training in Kashmir is the home school system. Home institutions are a cost-effective and innovative resolution to addressing the availability of schools check that has been overlooked in Pakistan. Home schools join the communities they serve by applying educated ladies (whom parents trust) as mentors. Currently, Taaluq foundation has 35 home schools in Kashmir obeying 1,810 students, mostly impoverished ladies.
In the remote areas of Kashmir, it is expensive and impossible to construct large school structures. Even if state schools exist, distances are so great that kids must travel by foot across the rough area to reach them. Many parents, therefore, do not send their kids to school, or attendance is unusual. Girls particularly suffer due to the safety issue of exploring by foot in mountains through changeable weather and an active political climate where the injury is easily provoked.
